Amazon HQ2 What Amazon Wants From the Chosen City

Amazon HQ2 What Amazon Wants From the Chosen City Cities may have uncovered the key to success in Amazon’s top-secret process for choosing the location of its “HQ2” second headquarters. Bloomberg BNA reported Monday that, in narrowing the applicant pool from 238 to 20, the company disqualified candidates that didn’t have a large tech workforce nearby. “Companies like Amazon, Facebook, Google and Apple are unique in that talent dwarfs everything else,” said Calandra Cruickshank, founder and CEO of StateBook International, an online marketplace that compiles information for companies looking to expand, told Bloomberg. “Workforce is the number one factor driving site selection decisions today.” Because HQ2 is expected to create as many as 50,000 jobs at its new $5 billion facility, Amazon needs its winning city to produce a sizable staff. It noted in its request for proposals that HQ2’s eventual location “must be sufficiently close to a significant population center” as well as have a “highly educated labor pool” and “strong university system.” The company didn’t return MONEY’s request for further details. Cities that made Amazon’s top 20 include Boston, Chicago, New York City and the Washington D.C. metro area. The short list left off places like Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Detroit â€" some of which have publicly blamed a talent shortage for their downfall. “At the end of the day, their feedback was that talent was the most important factor out of everything they looked at,” said Ed Loyd, a spokesman for the group that put together Cincinnati’s failed bid for HQ2, this past January. Sandy Baruah, the president and chief executive officer of the Detroit Regional Chamber, told the Detroit Free Press that Amazon gave him a similar explanation. “Since our renaissance is relatively new here, I think it’s difficult for Amazon to make the size of the bet they’re about to make on HQ2 in a place with a track record on talent that is good but not necessarily long enough,” he added. Nearly all of the regions on Amazon’s top 20 were also found by the Brookings Institution to be in the top 20 metropolitan areas with the biggest recent increase in tech jobs. Among them is rumored front-runner Washington, D.C., where Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is converting a 27,000-square-foot former museum into a house. But even the losers may end up winners eventually. Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s head of worldwide economic development, released a statement earlier this year telling the overlooked locations that, now that Amazon has learned all about them, the communities could be picked for future projects.

Why Millennials Arent Really Lazy - Work It Daily

Why Millennials Arent Really Lazy - Work It Daily The stereotypes surrounding Generation Y are all too familiar: self-entitled, unwilling to work hard, not as valuable to the workplace... the list goes on. The term Millennial has certainly earned itself a negative connotation. However, what is misconceived as laziness and entitlement is actually a lack of ability for 18 to 31 year old members of society to get jobs due to poor economic conditions. Related: How Recent Grads Can Break Into Their Industry Due to the current job market, only half of the 60% of Millennials who have a job are working full-time, and the highest share of this age group in four decades is still living at home. To make things worse, corporate job openings usually solicit a whopping 250 resumes for a single position, and many hiring managers do not intend to hire Millennials at all. Millennials aren’t refusing to work hard, they simply are having a tough time landing careers. But there is not much room for this generation to defeat the stereotypes of laziness against them, is there? Despite the less than favorable odds faced by Generation Y, the members of this group make an impressive commitment to being charitable and philanthropic. In fact, the Corporation for National and Community Service states that there has been a 23% increase in volunteerism between in 16-24 year olds between 1989 and 2005. Many millennials are truly passionate about volunteering and enjoy the expertise and relationships they gain out of devoting their time to causes they are interested in. Millennials donated a billion hours of their time between 2007 and 2008 alone, and Teach for America, the Peace Corps, and other major volunteer organizations are experiencing significant increases in applicants. And it doesn’t stop with time, either. The vast majority of Millennials donate money to organizations as well. Generation Y simply loves to volunteer and make a difference in the world. So, Millennials really aren’t that bad, are they? They can’t help that they face a job market whose lack of openings is keeping them from employment. They have no control over the fact that this lack of jobs is further tightened by the little desire among organizations to hire new grads. Yet, they still manage to devote their time and money to bettering the world in the midst of their job search. While worrying about their own futures, they still make time to worry about others, and because of this they have turned out to be a great generation indeed. Summer Camp Internship, For The Win Summer Camp Internship, For The WinThis is a guest post byAshli Blow,a student at The University of Memphis. Ashli studies broadcast news journalism and absatzwirtschaft management and she hopes to study trends in social media used in journalism. When I told my friends about getting an internship at a summer camp there were plenty of turned heads, wide-eyed stares, and jaws dropped.Considering that I am a double major in broadcast journalism and marketing management, I understand why my friends and family were confused.Well, I said telling my Dad about the opportunity, I would be the camp accountant. Ive taken two honors accounting classes, and Im great at excel. With no words there was the turned head, wide-eyed stare, and dropped jaw that I kept getting. At one point I was convinced myself that it was a ludicrous career move and I had no business being in charge of cash flows as a journalism business major. However, after many hugs and an epic good bye party thrown by my best friends, I was on a tuch to New Hampshire far away from my blues city home, Memphis.Did I tear up going far away on that plane? Yeah, I did. It took until I started making Miss America winner arm gestures and wailing like a 14-year-old girls first break up when a kind gentleman about my age began talking to me.So where are you going? he asked. Im going to an internship in New Hampshire, I said as I took off my headphones. I was listening to Faith Evans featuring Puff Daddy Ill be Missing You because I get kind of ridiculous and dramatic sometimes.Oh, Im going to my internship too Its in D.C. though , he said. Then it dawned on me. This may be the best decision I had made in my college career. Plenty of people my age leave their hometown to be interns. So what accounting wasnt my major? I was making contacts outside of my state and working basically a dream internship. And I was right Camp Wicosuta was completely another world with a great internship program better than I imagined. I got plenty of experience with excel and business communications, but at the same time I also got plenty of practice with friendship bracelets. So whats the lesson here? Well at Camp Wicosuta we taught confidence, competence, and community. Those three cs helped our campers grow however they are great to take with you to any internship as well.Have confidence in gaining competence in the community youre working in.
